Floodplain Management

Stormwater and the Community - Floodplain Management to Prevent Flooded Homes graphic
Floodplain Management's mission is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our citizens by providing adequate drainage and flood control within the community and to reduce the pollution of our nation's waterways by implementing a comprehensive stormwater quality management program. If you are building, remodeling or developing land located in the Floodplain you are required to obtain a Floodplain Development Permit. The application form can be found below under the Forms tab.

Stormwater is rain that falls on roofs or paved areas such as driveways and roads. The City of Jonesboro implements a type of drainage system which is referred to as a MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System). This water is carried away by a system of stormwater pipes and ditches that are separate from the cities sewage system.  Water running along curbs and into storm drains flows untreated into our local streams, ponds, lakes and creeks. Keeping drains and ditches clear of debris and chemicals improves Jonesboro's water quality.

The City of Jonesboro participates in National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) program which reduces flood insurance rates for the citizens of Jonesboro. The cities CRS rating is currently an 8, which reduces some flood insurance rates by 10%. Ask your insurance agent if you are receiving your discount for the cities participation in NFIP.

The city also maintains a file of Elevation Certificates (EC's), approximately 725 that are available by contacting our office by phone or by email. A list of the EC's on file can be found under the Flood Insurance tab below. Unfortunately, EC's are not available for all homes and businesses located in the cities floodplain. If you have an Elevation Certificate, the city would like a copy to add to our files for future inquires. You can email or mail a copy to our office.
